Ashley Girl’s Varsity Basketball Re-Cap

Lady Eagles advance to the 3rd Round with win over Laney in Triple OT  But fall to Seventy 71st High School in the 3rd Round Friday Night

NCHSAA 4A State Tournament
• 2/27 – Ashley 72 Laney 69 – Ashley and Laney battle it out for the 5th and final time of the season and a winner move on loser go home game. The 1st quarter was not how the Lady Eagles wanted to start the 2nd Round of the State Tournament falling behind Laney 14-7 by the end of the quarter. However the Ladies got their act together in the 2nd quarter and outscored Laney 18-7 thanks to a 10-2 run at the end of the quarter giving them a 25-21 lead at halftime.
After the halftime break the Eagles were able to continue to pull away outscoring the Bucs again 16-12 bringing there lead up to 8-points. The Eagles looked poised to take this game however Laney had other plans and after a 6-0 run they within 2-points with just over 4 minutes left. Both teams continued to stay close throughout the rest of regulation and ended in a tie 48-48. In the 1st overtime after more back and forth action Laney took a 3-point lead with under a minute to play at 57-54, but the Eagles were able to tie it up at 57-57 sending them into the 2nd OT.
In the 2nd Overtime Laney was able to again take the early lead going up by 4 with just over a minute left in the game. The Eagles hit a free throw to put them within 1 point with less than 30 seconds on the clock. After a change of possession the ladies got to within a point 64-63. The Bucs then connected on a free throw and with seconds left the Ladies were able to tie up the game again 65-65.
In the 3rd Overtime after a lot of missed opportunities on both sides the Eagles finally broke the tie 67-65 with 1:30 left. After trading baskets the Bucs got a turnover and tied up the game yet again at 69-69. Next 2 possessions resulted in a 3-pointer from both teams. With 10 seconds left on the clock the Eagles were able to get the ball in the hands of the right shooter who connected on there second straight 3-pointer with time expiring to give the Eagles the win 75-72.
• 3/1 – Ashley 52 71st 74 – After leading early in the 1st have 71st was able to take over and take a 5-point lead after the 1st quarter 22-17. Ashley was able to quickly tie up the game after coming out with a 5-0 run to start the 2nd quarter. However 71st held the Eagles to just 6 more points by halftime while their offense scored 23 giving them a sizable halftime lead 45-28. 71st came out with the same intensity going on a 9-2 run to start the 3rd quarter and ending with a even larger lead now at 20-points 62-42. Offense slowed down for 71st in the 4th quarter, but the Eagles couldn’t make up the difference ending their State Playoff run despite the 24-points from Felecity Havens and 12-points from Jada Bacchus.
