Ashley High School Cross Country Teams Competes in 2 Meets this past Week

The Girl’s that competed in the Champinship Race finished a impressive 13th Overall.

The Ashley High School Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Teams compete in there 1st Regular Season Meet of the Year at Hugh McRae Park this past Thursday and then traveled to South View High School on Saturday afternoon to compete in the 2013 Jungle Run.
On Thursday some of the Eagles were racing for the top 7 Spots at the Jungle Run, while others were able to save some energy for the weekend Invitational. The hot temp’s broke with some cloud coverage for the boy’s race, but by the time the girls race was into the 1st mile the rain started. The Eagles top 3 Boy’s went out a 5:00 for their 1st mile then dropped back, while South Brunswick’s Grant Hufham took over. Hufham held the lead throughout the rest of the race and was never challenged winning with a time of 16:59. He was followed by 5 Hoggard Vikings, with the 1st Eagles (Will Mayo) coming in at 9th Place with a time of 18:10. The rest of the 10 Eagles in the Varsity race times and places were: 21st David Fletchner 19:55, 22nd Chris Avery 20:05, 24th Rylee Smith 20:15, 29th Joesph Harty 20:36, 30th Stephen Wilson 20:40, 59th Daniel Lancaster 23:00 and 60th Cody Benton 23:34. Team Results were: Hoggard 20, Topsail 60, Ashley 105, Laney 150, Cape Fear Academy 151, Coastal Christian High School 157, South Brunswick High School 164, West Brunswick 193, and New Hanover 251.
In the Girl’s Race the hot temp’s gave way and the rain stated falling just after the 1st mile. The Hoggard Girls had a group of 3 girls take the early lead with Rachel Snider taking the win with a 21:13. Julia Boudreau lead a group of Eagles and finished with a time of 23:03 and took 8th Place, followed by: 9th Lindsey Williams 23:06, 13th Sydney Westra 23:16, 15th Rachel Luscher in her 1st ever race 23:35, 23rd Freshman Kaela Grosceclose 24:20, 32nd Erica DeSousa 25:23, 33rd Sara Silka 25:26, 36th Mghan Chinn 25:56, and 38th Jillian Yankey 26:18. Team Results were: Hoggard 20, Laney 54, Ashley 65, Cape Fear Academy 134, New Hanover 137, Coastal Christian High School 163, West Brunswick 184, South Brunswick 224, and Topsail No Score.
The final race of the day was the Junior Varsity Race. This race is not scored, but all times are counted, as kids in this race usually are able to get onto the Varsity Team if they run fast enough. Which happened for the Eagles after a Sophomore Nash Best ran his 1st ever 5K Cross Country race with a impressive time of 20:19. Another very impressive performance was from another 1st time cross country runner as Connor Snow finished with a time of 20:57. The rest of the times and places in the Junior Varsity Race were: 26th James Avery 21:34, 27th Thomas Avery 21:36, 33rd Adam Ortega 21:51, 39th Jeffery Hubbard 22:11, 40th Rodrick Allen 22:19, Nathen Mercer 22:30, David Elrod 22:38, Robbert Penna-Welch 23:24, Marshall Skelton 23:41, George Malahias 23:59, Nick Galonka 24:28, Peter Vogiatzis 24:29, Dylan Secero 24:54, Lucas Galonka 25:30, 1st Girl for Ashley Ryliegh McIntosh 25:37, Morgan Marraccini 25:38, Cameron Seyer 25:52, Madsion Smith 27:04, Haliee Kiesecker 27:08, Maggie Skelton 27:11, Harley Keyson 27:27, Chloe Deets 27:29, Maggie Shibley 28:14, Bailry Williams 28:44, Kensleigh Ables 29:01, Emilee Troutwine 29:50, Ashley Merritt 29:57, Meg Taylor 30:23, Ritchie Bland 30:37, Jordan Shapiro 30:43, Hanna Toppin 30:47, Kayley Smith 31:35, Alex Signorello 33:50, and Andrea Granto 34:03.
On Saturday the Teams made there way to Hope Mills, North Carolina were South View High School was hosting the 2013 Jungle Run. This is a race put on by the South View Tigers with the big drawing point being the last 4 races are run from dusk to dark with the last race starting at 9:40.
The 1st race up for the Eagles was the JV Boys race. I this race the fastest Eagle across the line was Adam Ortega 22:14. The team finished 13th Place Overall out of 22 teams and had an average time of 22:48. Adam was followed by freshman Nathan Ovall with a time of 22:24, Marshall Skelton 22:44, Rodrick Allen 22:47, Nick Galonka 23:53, George Malahias 24:07, Peter Vogiatzis 24:37, Dylan Secero 24:44, Robert Penna-Welch 25:25, Jeffery Hubbard 25:40, Ritchie Bland dropped 3 minutes in 2 days with his 27:47, Harley Keyston ran a 28:01, Ian Reinchow 28:02, Alex Signotello 29:09.
The 2nd Race up was the JV Girls, Maggie Sihibley lead the way for the team finishing with a time of 27:23. The team finished 15th Place Overall. She was followed by:  Emilee Troutwine 27:57, Ashley Merritt 29:38, Hanna Topping 29:38, Kaley Smith 31:28, Andrea Granto 31:47, Loring Penna-Welch 33:22, and Madison Bonser 33:26.
In the Invitational Boys Race the Boys finished 11th out of 29 different teams with a average time of 19:30. Leading the way for the Eagles in this race was Rylee Smith 34th with an 18:54. He was followed by: 40th Vaughn Rizzo 19:02, 63rd Cody Benton 19:33, 66th Connor Snow 19:37, 106th Nathan Mercer 20:27, 128th Thomas Avery 21:08, 174 James Avery. In the Invitational Girls Race the Eagles fastest finisher was freshman Ryleigh McIntosh who finished in 70th Place with a time of 24:51. She was followed closely by teammates: Erica DeSous in 82nd Place with a 25:15, 92nd Madison Smith 25:47, 98th Abigail Efting 26:04, 113 Maggie Skelton 26:29, 115 Meg Taylor 26:37, 116 Chole Deets 26:39, The Ladies finished up the race 17th out of 25 teams with an average time of 25:41.
The Boy’s Championship Race had perfect conditions and the Eagles got off to a great start. By the 2nd mile the Eagles team had placed themselves in the top 10 and were moving up, but ended up in 8th Place Overall out of 33 teams. Joseph Harty took over and started leading the race for the Eagles after the 2nd Mile mark and finished in 30th Place with a time of 16:55. Joe was followed by teammates: Stephen Wilson 34th 17:01, Daniel Lancaster 17:21, Will Mayo 17:36, Chris Avery 18:09, 127th David Fletchner 18:37 and Nash Best 19:22. After this weekend the Eagles are ranked 21st in the State, 15th in the NCHSAA 4A, and 4th in the NCHSAA 4A East Region 1 point ahead of Pine Forest.
The Ladies Championship Race was the final race up on the night and had the coolest running conditions of the day. The Eagles front-runner Julia Boudreau got a great start and was able to put her self in the top 20 (Top 20 Medal) and stay there throughout her whole race. By the time she entered the track for her final lap she was in the top 13 and almost snuck into the top 10 with a tremendous final kick! She ended up running a new personal best time of 20:03. She was followed by teammates: 65th Sydney Westra 22:13 PR, 66th Sara Silka 22:19 PR, 88th Morgan Marriccinni 23:04, Rachel Luscher 24:30, Jillian Yankey 24:53, and Meghan Chinn 24:55. The Ladies finished a impressive 13th Place Overall in this race with a average time of 22:31. The Ladies are ranked 31st in the NCHSAA 4A and
After a hard week of training the Eagles will be competing in the addidas Seahawk Invitational at UNCW this Saturday morning. Their next Regular Season contest will be on the road at South Brunswick High School next Wednesday, September 11th.
