On Saturday, May 5, the Ashley Eagles Athletic Booster Club will host a golf tournament at Masonboro Country Club to raise funds for their existing sports programs. This shotgun start, captain’s choice tournament has an early entry fee of $300 per team if registered prior to April 1. After the early registration date, it is $340 per team with an entry deadline of April 21. Participants will enjoy refreshments throughout the day and a lunch afterward from Rucker John’s Restaurant. Raffle prizes are a highlight because everyone will win something, whether it is a baseball cap or a $25 gift certificate to an area restaurant. But the big winners of the tournament will be the student athletes of Ashley High School. Athletic director, Roy Turner, has determined that the Ashley Eagles Athletic Boosters Club spends on average $88 per athlete. With a budget of $30,000, this is the Booster Club’s main fundraiser. They receive around $4,000 annually from dues and are dependent upon generous sponsors and fundraisers for the remainder. Last year, the golf tournament brought in over $4,000, with $1,500 being made from the silent auction.
With major budget cuts to school extracurricular funding, it is even more important for the Booster Club to rely on the community for help. Sporting programs at Ashley offer students a unique experience in gaining valuable lessons. Athletes learn to set individual and team goals and learn how to cooperate together to achieve those goals. In addition, they develop confidence that cannot be obtained in the classroom by encouraging students to be active and self-reliant. Ashley Athletics serves as spirit builders for the entire school and community.
