Kure Beach Summer SportsFest Men's 8.0 Combo Doubles and FREE Junior Tennis Carnival

The doubles team of Brian Koehn and Wally Hinkleman, from the Raleigh area, won the first  Kure Beach Summer SportsFest Men's 8.0 Combo Doubles Tournament held at Joe Eakes Park on Saturday and Sunday.  It was a hard fought match against Kure Beach’s own Sonny Beeker and Harold Heglar.  Beeker and Heglar had to retire during the 2nd set due to an injury incurred by Beeker.
The Kure Beach doubles team of Denny Clouse and Art Klein, won the Consolation Bracket of the tournament.  The Tournament was the culmination of two days of well played tennis.   Eight doubles teams participated in the tournament with teams from Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, Wilmington, and the Raleigh area.
The SportsFest included a Double Sprint Triathlon as well as tournaments in Tennis, Disc Golf, Bocce Ball, and Cornhole.  The two day event started on Saturday June 2 and finished on Sunday June 3.  There were well over 600 participants in the SportsFest. Included in the SportsFest was a FREE Junior Tennis Carnival sponsored by the North Carolina Tennis Association (NC Tennis) and Pleasure Island Tennis.  The event was open to juniors 5 to 10 years old. 40 junior players participated in the Skills Tennis Carnival that had 4 stations of tennis drills and physical training. According to PTR Coach Billie Fitzsimons the turn-out was an “overwhelming” success.  Both Mayor Lambeth and Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Gabby Kraus were very “pleased” the Tennis Carnival.  The highlight for Mayor Lambeth was the Tennis Carnival.  “I didn’t realize we had so many young tennis players in our area!”  Look for the SportsFest next year to again kick off the summer programs at Kure Beach.
