4th Annual North Carolina Beach Wrestling Championships

2012 Winners: Logan Scott, Cody Deterding, Aidan Hicks, Thaddeus Poore, Hunter Starling, Tavarius Hall, Keith Neal, Donny DePalto, and Tyler Wozniak

The 2012 North Carolina USA Wrestling State Beach Wrestling Championships was held this past Saturday, June 16th on the beach in front of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk!  Competition got started at 12 noon directly in front of the bandstand area. Beach Wrestling was added as a style of international wrestling in 2005. Athletes compete on sand, in a style that features takedowns within a ring. The sport has been growing in popularity across the nation and world. USA Wrestling has sanctioned Beach events since 2005, and held its first U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials in 2006. FILA hosted the first World Championships in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey.
Results from the event include: 10 and under Lightweights - 1st-Logan Scott (Lumberton), 2nd-Jack Dillon (Wilmington) and 3rd-Callie Reitzel (Kure Beach); 10 and under Heavyweights - 1st- Cody Deterding (Georgia) and  2nd-Marie Duncan (Spruce Pine); 11-14 Lightweights - 1st-Aidan Hicks (Hampstead), 2nd-Piero Tenorio (Apex), and 3rd-Jacob Toms (Eden); 11-14 Middleweights - 1st-Thaddeus Poore (Castle Hayne), 2nd-Joe Dan Hicks (Hampstead), and 3rd-Hughes(Hampstead; 11-14 Heavyweights - 1st- Hunter Starling (Wilmington), 2nd-Matt Lusher (Holly Springs), and 3rd- Keith Blake (Durham); 15-18 Lightweights - 1st- Tavarius Hall (Lumberton), 2nd-Daniel Wilson (Wilmington/Hoggard HS), and 3rd-David Wilson (Wilmington/Hoggard HS); 15-18 Heavyweights - 1st- Keith Neal (Raleigh), 2nd-Jonathan Stinnard (Gastonia), and 3rd-Tate Correll (Wilmington /Laney HS); 19 and over Lightweights - 1st-Donny DePalto (Jacksonville/USMC), 2nd- Lee Reitzel (Kure Beach), and 3rd-Chris D'allesandro (Wilmington); 19 and over Heavyweights - 1st-Tyler Wozniak (Eden), 2nd- Ike Okoli (Hopkins, SC), and  3rd-Jeremy Martin (Wilmington)
