Hammerheads finish 2-1 over Battery and finish out Regular Season Undefeated at Legion Stadium

Gareth Evans and Corey Hertzog combine for back-to-back goals in the first half of Saturday’s match at Legion Stadium to propel the Hammerheads past the Battery in their weekend double header with Charleston. Wilmington’s 2-1 victory extends the Hammerhead’s unbeaten streak to eleven consecutive games on their home field. The Hammerheads traveled to Blackbaud Stadium on Friday to take on the Battery, concluding in a 2-2 draw. Both teams then traveled to Wilmington to face one another in a rematch at Legion Stadium on Saturday. The Hammerheads and Battery faced off back in mid-July in Charleston that led the Battery to a 3-1 win over the Hammerheads.
The Hammerheads spotted the Battery a goal 17 minutes into the first half when Charlie Romero converted on a cross to slip the ball past Hammerheads goalkeeper Alex Horwath to the back of the net. Horwath attempted to knock the ball away and was just short of reaching the shot, giving Charleston the lead to start the night. However, Charleston’s early lead didn’t last long as the Hammerheads broke through on the score sheet in the 34thminute. Defender Gareth Evans used his height to place a header just above the hands of Charleston goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra. Evan’s conversion off Corey Hertzog’s throw-in gave him his first goal of the season and put the Hammerheads right back in the game. The Hammerheads had numerous opportunities throughout the night putting much pressure on the Battery defense. Corey Hertzog’s goal in the 45th minute would become the deciding factor in the night’s outcome, pushing the Hammerheads just past Charleston. Midfielder Paul Nicholson’s cross found a racing Hertzog on the backside of the goal who is easily able to pound the ball to the back of the net. Hertzog’s goal would be his 8th of the season, pairing him with fellow Hammerheads player Andriy Budnyy for the most goals on the team this season thus far. Wilmington will have a two week break to rest before facing the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday, August 18th to finish off the season as the final push for the playoffs is underway. The date for the makeup match versus Charlotte is still undecided due to the last time Wilmington traveled to Charlotte and they postponed the game due to field malfunction. Hammerheads, Eagles Postponed Match Officially Rescheduled - The July 21, 2012 match between the Wilmington Hammerheads and the Charlotte Eagles at Charlotte Christian Stadium that was postponed for a later date due to unsuitable field conditions has officially been rescheduled. After weeks of deliberation, the game has been scheduled to take place on Friday, August 17 at Wingate University with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Wingate University Soccer Complex.
The original match-up between the two teams in July was called off just prior to kickoff after an examination of the field proved unplayable. Days before, a large rainstorm hit the Charlotte area causing damage throughout the community and at the stadium.
This will be the final away game for the Wilmington Hammerheads during the 2012 regular season. The Hammerheads’ last home game at Legion Stadium is scheduled for the following day, Saturday, August 18, versus the Charlotte Eagles in a back-to-back doubleheader. A final match win at Legion will result in the Hammerheads being undefeated for the entire 2012 season on their home turf. With only two games left, the Hammerheads are currently tied for third in the USL PRO rankings with the Charleston Battery amid Richmond, Harrisburg, and Charlotte trailing behind just within reach hoping to make a spot in the playoffs.
