Hammerheads News: Wilmington Upsets Dayton in Stoppage Time

Cody Arnoux finds Hammerheads victory in final minute of match, playoffs still in reach

Wilmington Hammerheads 2 Dayton Dutch Lions 1 - The Wilmington Hammerheads continued the winning streak they needed to keep their playoff hopes alive as they took a 2-1 victory over the Dayton Dutch Lions on Friday night at Legion Stadium. Wilmington's Cody Arnoux found the final goal that claimed Hammerheads victory in stoppage time that continues to feed the team's appetite for a spot in the league rankings that will qualify for playoffs.
Dayton and Wilmington shared possession the length of the field for majority of the first half. Dayton forward Gibson Bardsley took the first shot of the night for the Dutch Lions in the ninth minute from the top corner of the penalty area sending the ball soaring over the crossbar. Wilmington's Kyle Greig followed with the Hammerheads first attempt in the 21st minute that resulted in a hard deflection of the first of Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams to remove the play from the penalty area.
Hammerheads midfielder Bryce Taylor gained his first opportunity of the evening as he went one-on-one with Williams off a long ball, but could just put a foot on the ball enough to get a touch before deflecting off Williams and going out of bounds. The Hammerheads increased the score by one off a Daniel Steres header that allowed Mickael Oliveira to get a volley into the upper corner of the net. Bardsley tallied four shots for the Dutch Lions, adding to their final seven shots overall. The Hammerheads logged 16 shots overall as they forced back-to-back attempts in Dayton territory. Dayton's Joseph Madigan equalized the score in the 68th minute, sliding the ball into the net just shy of Hammerheads goalkeeper Philip Tuttle as he came off his line. Numerous attempts were taken by Wilmington in the final ten minutes of the match, putting anxious fans and supporters on their feet in anticipation. Of the overall 16 shots taken by the Hammerheads, five were taken in stoppage time. The winning goal came within less than a minute left in the match as Cody Arnoux took a shot in the penalty area that deflected off the left post and into the goal. The Wilmington Hammerheads must claim victories in their final two matches of the season to be considered for a spot in the USL PRO playoffs in the coming weeks.
