A softball tournament benefiting the Michael McGowan Endowed Scholarship Fund at Cape Fear Community College and Pleasure Island Sports will take place October 4-6 at Mike Chappell Park in Carolina Beach. The tournament, named for beloved Carolina Beach Chef Michael McGowan, is being coordinated by the Carolina Beach Downtown Initiative and Pleasure Island Revitalization Association.
Over 30 games will be played during the 16-team double elimination tournament. Mac Montgomery, tournament organizer, says that the goal is to bring the community together, as McGowan so often did. "Michael was a strong supporter of the Carolina Beach community. He was always willing to lend a hand. We want to honor his memory with this tournament. It will be a fun way to get the community together, as well as raise funds for the CFCC scholarship established in his memory," said Montgomery. Once the $20,000 goal for the endowed scholarship at CFCC is met, qualifying students in CFCC's culinary program will be able to apply for scholarship funds that will assist them in pursuing their educational goals.
The registration per team is $250 per team that guarantees all teams a minimum of 2 games played and a maximum of 15 commemorative tournament T-shirts. Food Trucks will be used to provide food during the event and beer will be available for purchase on Friday and Saturday 5-11PM and Sunday 12PM-closing ceremonies. Team registrations and additional sponsors for the event are now being accepted.
