Veteran Signs 2-Year Deal with Wilmington Club
Wilmington, NC – The Wilmington Hammerheads are pleased to announce that veteran player Paul Nicholson will be returning to the squad for the 2014 USL PRO regular season. The midfielder has agreed to a two-year deal with the club that will extend his career with the Hammerheads through the 2015 USL PRO regular season.
In 2013, Nicholson appeared in 21 regular season matches, scoring three goals and tallying one assist. Nicholson first signed with the Hammerheads in 2011 and has remained with the club for the previous three USL PRO seasons. “I am pleased that we had the opportunity to re-sign Paul Nicholson,” said Wilmington Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. “Paul has been with the Hammerheads for three years now and has probably been one of our most consistent performers on the field, in addition to being well-liked in the community.”
During the offseason, Nicholson is the assistant soccer coach at Cape Fear Academy. He is also involved in the youth programs with Cape Fear Soccer Club.
A native of Whitehaven, England, Nicholson played for the University of Rio Grande in Ohio from 2005 to 2008. Nicholson was named in the All-Tournament team for the 2008 NAIA Tournament and was selected the tournament’s Most Valuable Defensive Player. Nicholson was the second player in Rio Grande history and the only NAIA player to be invited to the Major League Soccer (MLS) combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in 2009. The Englishman played in the Premier Development League (PDL) in 2009 for the West Virginia Chaos and for MPS Portland Phoenix in 2010 where he played every minute of every game and was named the ‘Players, Player of the Year’.
