Carolina Beach Elementary School has announced plans for their 2nd Annual Holland Hustle, a 5K run/walk event and 1.2 mile fun run on Sunday, May 6 at the school at 400 South 4th Street in Carolina Beach. This family fun event drew in over 300 participants and numerous sponsors last year. Race proceeds will benefit Carolina Beach Elementary School Music and Technology program in memory of CBES teachers Vickie Holland and Paula Holland. Together, the two dedicated sixty years to the school. In addition, a portion will go to help the Physical Education department. The 1.2 mile fun run fee is $10 with race-day start at 2:00 p.m. The 5K run/walk will start at 3:00 p.m. Early 5K registration is $25 for all entrants with race-day registration set for $30 per entrant. Race day registration is from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 6. On-line registration will soon be available.
New this year for kids wanting to compete in their first “marathon” is the Star Marathon Club. Coach Bellamy will be leading this program. Participants will keep a weekly running log, which must be signed by an adult, running anywhere from two or more miles per week. Each week, the distance will be tallied on up to 25 miles. Upon completing training runs of 6, 12, 18 and 24, participants will be given a “symbol” to put on their shoe lace, denoting they have completed the distance. At the Holland Hustle, participant will run the 1.2 mile fun run to complete their “marathon” journey with all their training runs adding up to the full 26.2 miles to make up a marathon. Upon completing the fun run, members of the Star Marathon Club will receive a special reward.
