Greg Thompson wins the 15th Annual Kure Beach Double Sprint Triathlon

This past Saturday, Kure Beach was the venue for the Kure Beach Double Sprint Triathlon which celebrated its 15th year of production.  Dedicated triathletes from all around gathered together at 7:00 am to gear up for the 375 meter ocean swim with the current, 1.5 mile run, 20k bike, 1.5 run, ending in a final 375 meter swim.  At the sound of the air horn, participants entered the water to face a very calm ocean which initiated the start of the race.  The triathletes ended their race with a short sprint to the finish line after emerging out of the water where the beach was full of race supporters cheering them through.  Greg Thompson from Whitsett NC finished the race with a time of 1:04:46 winning the overall Men category.  While Kelly McLaughlin from Durham NC won the Women’s Overall category with her time of 1:13:01.  This event benefited Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training.
The top 3 Overall winners were: Male: Greg Thompson 1:04:46, Ben Rachunok 1:04:51, and Zack Capets 1:05:38. Females: Kelly McLaughlin 1:13:01 and Brooke Campese 1:17:27. The Master’s Winner’s were: Male: Neil Peterken 1:07:48, Wade Laufenberg 1:09:33 and Philip Hatcher 1:12:37.
