4th Annual March of Dimes 5K Run for Healthier Babies

The March of Dimes 4th Annual 5K Run for Healthier Babies  is scheduled for Saturday, September 1st at the TrySports field in Mayfaire,, Wilmington, N.C.  Registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. and the 5K race will kick off at 8 a.m.
“I am so excited to be bringing the  5K Run for Babies to Wilmington again this year ,” said Jen Peterken, race director and board member of the Southeastern Chapter of the March of Dimes. “The March of Dimes has personally touched my family, as it has for many of the families I know.  It gives me great joy to be able to give back to an organization  that plays such an important role in raising awareness and funds to support vital research and to ensure all babies have the best start in life they can. I encourage all Wilmington area runners and residents to join us in this important work.”
The 5K Run for Healthier Babies raises thousands of dollars each year to improve the health of moms and babies.  Now entering its third year, this event promises to be a fun filled morning for the whole family.  The 5K Run for Healthier Babies includes both a competitive 5K race as well as a one-mile Fun Run, which enjoys active participation from both families and youth.  Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female, top 3 masters male and female as well as the top three age group  participants in the 5K race.  The top male and female overall winners with also receive $100 in cash.
Funds raised by the 5K Run for Healthier Babies will support lifesaving research and educational programs aimed at giving every baby a healthy start.  Some of those programs include the North Carolina Preconception Health Campaign, the Prenatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina’s 39 week initiative to eliminate inductions and c-sections that are not medically necessary, and the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Project at UNC Children’s Hospital.  The most urgent infant health problem in the United States today is premature birth.  It affects more than half a million babies each year with the number growing every day.  In an average week in North Carolina, 325 babies are born prematurely.
In 50% of those cases, we don’t know why.  March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the answers to premature birth and providing comfort and information to families who are affected.  The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies®, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
