The William H. Craig Race for Life 5k coming up December 8th

The Wilmington Family YMCA is pleased to announce the 6th annual William H. Craig Race for Life 5k.The event will be on Saturday, December 8th  at 8:00 am. Location of the race will be at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. This race was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Bill Craig and his many contributions to the community. This race is presented by Campbell Orthodontics.
Other sponsors that make this race possible include, PPD, Pet Dairy, Tru Moo, Chick-Fil-A, Sport Clips, Sweet and Sassy, New Balance of Wilmington, Fountain Financial, Gas Centers, Southerland Insurance, Wilmington Dermatology Center, Richard Butler, DDS, Azalea Gynecology, and Block, Crouch, Keeter, Behm & Sayed, LLP Attorneys at Law.
All funds from this event will provide financial support on an annual basis to programs that Dr. Craig supported including the Girls on the Run and STRIDE programs, the Victory Junction Gang, and other charities involving children. 900 runners are expected at this race. Approximately 440 will be boys and girls who are participating in the programs.

Girls on the Run is a preventative outreach program that uses the power of running to help prepare young girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. This innovative health education and wellness program combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with life-changing, self esteem enhancing lessons that encourage healthy habits and an active lifestyle for girls in grades 3rd-8th.  STRIDE, like Girls on the Run, is a 10 week running program, but for boys in grades 3rd-5th  that focuses on fun, fitness and character development. The boys are also given the opportunity to talk with each other and their coaches about issues they are facing at school, in sports, in the community and at home. During the 10 weeks, the curriculum covers topics that are designed to help develop excellent character; Success, Teamwork, Respect, Inspiration, Determination= Excellence in Character.  The Girls on the Run and STRIDE programs consist of 88 teams in 8 counties; New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Carteret, Craven, Onslow, Sampson and Columbus County. This fall season the YMCA is providing Girls on the Run and STRIDE to about 1,115 boys and girls. Out of the 88 teams, 35 will be attending the William H. Craig Race for Life 5k and approximately 440 girls and boys who are participating in the program will be attending.
